What is the difference between seals and otters

Quiet and shy, harbor seals can be seen year-round resting on rocks just offshore. These small, plump seals have spotted gray to black coats. Often curious, harbor seals will watch people walking along the shore or follow divers or kayakers in the water. Fast nocturnal predators, they hunt for a variety of fish, octopus and squid. In spring they congregate on protected beaches and give birth to a single pup.

Although they spend most of the year feeding far offshore, elephant seals can be seen on beaches and islands when breeding, pupping or resting. Diving an average depth of 1, feet meters , they feed on fishes and squid. In winter huge males with large elephant-like noses and long canine teeth engage in bloody battles to establish territories and harems of females. Females give birth soon after they arrive on beaches and nurse their pups for about a month.

Pups learn how to swim and dive on their own. The difference between Otter and Seal is that Otter comes from the Mustelidae family whereas a seal belongs to the Phocidae family. Both of them belong to different families in spite of the fact that both are mammals, produce milk, and give birth. A major difference comes into the picture when we see their strategy of keeping themselves warm. Otters use their dense fur as a way to keep themselves warm while Seals got a blubber deposit inside their skin.

There are many more differences regarding their physique, features , and habits. Sea Otters are the mammals that live in seas and oceans near the eastern north and the northern Pacific Ocean. A fully-grown sea otter weighs around 14 to 45 kg which makes them the heaviest member in the smallest marine animals in the Weasel family. Unlike other mammals in the ocean, they do not have blubber under their skin.

They have a very thick layer of fur over their body to protect them from cold. They are semiaquatic, aquatic, or marine-based on the fish and the invertebrates. They usually have long, slim bodies and possess short limbs. The otters differ from other marine mammals due to their sturdy webbed feet that they use to swim. The seal-like abilities help them hold breath underwater, and with this, they have sharp claws on their feet, and the sea otters especially have long, muscular tails.

There are a lot of differences between the families but the main ones are that the Walrus have large whiskers and tusks, Eared seals have external earflaps while the True seals only have a hole. In the Eared seal family there are 2 subfamilies, the Fur seals and the Sea lions.
