What is scouting for food




















Partner Agencies. Local food pantries outside St. Louis City and County. Attend your district's roundtable meeting to receive your unit's territory map and allotment of SFF bags. Assemble with your Pack, Troop, or Crew at a pre-determined location. All Scouts should travel in groups of two or more the Buddy System. Break up your assigned territory and hit the streets! Bags should be distributed to residences only, no businesses. Scouts should not enter apartment buildings.

Scouts should not enter any homes and should not put the bags in mailboxes. This allows families time to place the food outside. Have your groups cover the same area where they distributed bags. This will minimize the risk of homes being missed. After thoroughly canvassing your assigned area take the collected items to your assigned drop-off location. Collection sites are open from am to 4 pm.

Please drive through your assigned area by car in the early afternoon to collect any bags missed during morning pick up. Keep an extra eye out to help keep them safe, and be sure to put your bag of canned goods out for them to collect one week later. Be sure to put your canned goods out by 10 AM and in a spot easily seen from the street. Scouts and their families will be coming around to collect your donations and take them to a local sorting location or food pantry, so be careful on the roads!

When does it take place? Can I just donate money? Why do we participate in Scouting for Food? A: Eating a variety of healthful food in sensible amounts is important for all, and this can be particularly challenging for families in need. While all donations are appreciated, be sure to practice thoughtful giving this season.

Dietitions suggest donating a variety of nutritious items, such as cans of chili, soups, tuna, pasta sauce, evaporated milk, fruit and vegetables. This gives hungry families more of what they need.

Q: With So many Scouts distributing bags and collecting cans in neighborhoods, are there ever any accidents or injuries? All Scouts are given safety guidelines before each Saturday event, and the units are accompanied by their Scout leader and parent volunteers. With thousands of participants traversing roadways, both Scouts and drivers alike are encouraged to exercise caution on these two Saturdays. It is recommended that drivers be careful when backing out of driveways and reduce their speed by 5 to 10 miles per hour while traveling in subdivisions.
