The man will tell you that it was his quality standard and his lack of sleep; in that working nights and creating hot rods by day can only continue for so long. His decision to leave the stability of a Disneyland paycheck for the dream and career of designing and building hot rods will forever be automotive lore.
These cars were also well thought out and engineered, no more amalgamation of parts from various commuter cars, Boyd fabricated his own parts from billet aluminum. A Boyd Coddington hot rod is an original masterpiece with many parts that may have been created for that particular vehicle. The cars created by Coddington are so special they have been honored with inclusion in museums and in industry retrospectives.
Collectors world wide cherish his hot rods for their unique individuality. It may have started with machining a simple mirror from a piece of aluminum commonly referred to as a billet made from aluminum.
Mirrors were merely the beginning and soon the two were experimenting with almost any part imaginable. The interior has tons of premium cowhides along with ostrich!
Likewise, the wheels are custom units but they're a little tough to appreciate hidden beneath the sculpted skirts. Under the hood is no ordinary engine but a Up next is a custom pickup fit for a rockstar - both figuratively and literally. Known as "Boyd's Hauler," Chip Foose handled much of the work on this one.
Boyd and Chip started with a Chevy with a shortbed, Corvette engine and a R4 automatic transmission. The truck received a custom lowered suspension setup with a Corvette independent rear setup. On the nose there's a billet grille and a custom front bumper and air dam. And of course Eddie's ride also received the obligatory Boyd wheels with 16" pieces in the front and 17" units outback. It also sports a custom stainless steel Magnaflow exhaust and audio system courtesy of Memphis Audio.
The "Deuce Coupe" is perhaps one of the most identifiable hot rods on the planet and Boyd put his unique touch on this model as well.
Boyd's '32 was also featured on a special Discovery Channel presentation of "American Hot Rod" detailing the build. Thank you for visiting Hot Rods by Boyd.
