I have a big heart and each day I want to come in here and compete. Still, not every big-bodied wide receiver can walk into an NFL training camp and have the kind of success Strachan has had. There are nuances and details that have to be on point before someone of Strachan's stature can go up and snag a jump ball. Veteran Colts cornerback Xavier Rhodes has spent some time after practices working on those things with Strachan, giving him pointers on what he as a defender is looking for to limit the effectiveness of someone who's 6-foot-5, pounds and speedy.
And Rhodes would know — he's usually matched up on bigger receivers and has been lined up across guys like Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones and Brandon Marshall in his career. And if he can accomplish those goals, then he can be the best whomever he want. Strachan finished Wednesday's practice at Grand Park with a touchdown; he was lined up against Rhodes on the play.
Strachan is part of a deep, competitive group of receivers making their mark on training camp over the last few weeks. The Colts want to see everyone in their wide receiver room continue to compete at the level they've been at throughout camp. And Strachan, certainly, is among the players who've turned heads at Grand Park — and now at Lucas Oil Stadium — over the last few weeks.
Hilton said. He runs really fast. I can't wait to see the things he continues to do. The Indianapolis Colts return to action as they host the Carolina Panthers for their first game of the preseason.
After being redshirted in , Johnson played in 11 games in as a reserve as Miami went and was ranked second in the country. Meanwhile, Wayne caught 10 touchdowns as a senior and then went on to the NFL and was drafted in the draft at 30th overall. Johnson came into his own as a sophomore and racked up 89 catches for over 1, yards over the next two seasons. The two would go on to have stellar careers, Wayne with the benefit of outstanding quarterbacks in Indianapolis and Johnson toiling away as the sole offensive force worth watching in Houston until the team brought in an undrafted running back named Arian Foster in Pagano, who recruited Johnson to Miami back in , then helped recruit Johnson to Indianapolis earlier this month to take Wayne's place in Indianapolis.
And while very different players, Johnson and Wayne share enough characteristics on the field for Johnson to have a clear path for success in Like Wayne, Johnson has never been a touchdown magnet, never catching double-digit touchdowns in a season.
In Indianapolis, that's fine, as the Colts turn toward their tight ends and running backs heavily in the red zone. Like Wayne, Johnson has been a high-volume receiver with a lower yards-per-reception figure. In fact, both receivers have averaged Hilton, Donte Moncrief and the Colts' two tight ends last year.
Like Wayne, Johnson had a down year at age 33, the worst thus far in his career. But that actually may be a good sign for Johnson. When united with a quality quarterback again, Wayne had a career year in , catching passes for 1, yards. Hilton will still be the No. The manner in which the two seasons occur should be similar, although not the exact same.
Like Wayne, Johnson will fill the third-down security-blanket role as a possession receiver, and he will likely run a lot of short and intermediate routes. We still see a guy that is more than capable of stretching the defense. Unlike Wayne, Johnson won't be doing his work from the slot. Wayne ran routes from the slot in , according to Pro Football Focus , the second-most slot routes of any receiver in the league. It was kind of awkward passing people and being next to people at a stoplight.
But it was pretty cool. Wayne settled on his IndyCar ride when "Plan A got shot down," he admitted. Maybe I'll be able to do it another time. That's not to say Carpenter and IndyCar weren't an appropriate fall-back plan. It made sense on several levels. We need a sense of urgency. We need to come out moving with some speed. Wayne was asked if arriving in an IndyCar was a sign he's got his "wheels" back. The six-time Pro Bowl selection missed the final nine games of after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Oct.
After a Thursday morning walk-through which is closed to the public, the Colts go through their first open camp practice at p.
