Thank you for the tutorial!! I was just given a table that looks almost exact to the one you have. I was not loving the dark finish and love the distressed look of the white paint I really didn't want a bright white , but wasn't sure of the best method. I'd love to see the chairs you refinished.
Thank you for all the breakdown in detail. Where is the best place to purchase the wax? And how does it come? Thanks again!! I know, antique lovers are probably screaming at me right about now.
I learned this later after doing some research. Anyway they got chopped off and I rounded the ends by lightly sanding them. The original base of the table had quite a big box around it to hold up the table top. My mom and I had several discussions on whether we should remove it completely or not. In the end she convinced me to remove it and I think that was the best decision. It makes the table look so much better. Then I cut and attached small blocks of wood from the original box around the table, to the big block in the centre.
These blocks of wood have the original holes in them that the screws go into. This would allow me to be able to attach the top to the base. Next I stained the table base and the top with varathane brand in the colour kona. I brushed on the stain with a paint brush first and then I used an old rag to rub it in. This will help with brush stroke marks. Then I finished off with a couple of coats of Polycrylic in a satin finish. And voila I had the table of my dreams! It fits perfectly in the entry way space.
Duncan Phyfe Table Makeover Hi everyone! Like this: Like Loading First Name. Last Name. For a dining table, we recommend our Tough Coat. Fusion water-based clear Tough Coat is non yellowing and great for maintaining the color you painted. While there is minimal odour, it dries quickly so you need to work fast to avoid start-and-stop marks. You could add Extender to the mix to increase the open time. All water based coatings can take days to cure, so we recommend lighter use during that time.
Hazing can happen with water based coatings over dark colours, so typically we recommend an oil based coating. Our Finishing Oil in Natural that has no pigment will make the colour a bit richer and deeper and may slightly increase the sheen of the paint. You could also use the brush-on Gel Stain Topcoat which is a poly urethane. In this instance, the best thing to do is to test a small area and see what you like best.
The Gel Stain is a self levelling poly-coating, but looks more like a coating whereas the SFO is very thin. Gel Stain only dries matte, whereas SFO can increase in sheen with applications. For this completed look, s tay tuned for the rest of the series featuring the following DIYs:. Let it dry completely. Then sand it. Once you've done all that, time to stain.
It is messy and can permanently stain anything it gets on. Practice on scrap wood if you've never stained before. A clear water based sealer will protect the new finish. Good luck and stay safe! You can stain over stain with gel stain and minimal prep. You can go darker. Any good brand will do. Minwax has instructions. Hi Nichole. Yes, you are right. If you want to change the stain on this beauty, you will need to either sand or strip it first.
I would use Citristrip. It's a good product and saves a lot of elbow grease. If you sand it, be sure to get all the sanding dust off and then comes the stain.
I hope this helps you Nichole. Good luck with your table. WOW this is gorgeous! I am so happy you want to stain it. Painted pieces are beautiful as well but when you have something like that which looks like it is in great shape, wood is nice, no peeling veneer I love a pretty stain.
I wouldn't bother stripping it. Whenever I have used a stripper to remove stain, it never totally does. Just get right to sanding. Just know there will be a ton of dust!! Use a vacuum when sanding. Sand it all down, start with grit and work your way up to grit. Precondition the wood with a wood preconditioner so the wood accepts the stain evenly. Then use whatever stain. To get a pro finish like in a furniture store , steel wool in between coats. You will want to finish it off with a nice sealer.
